The Need:
Before Hurricane Katrina’s devastating landfall, children in New Orleans had over 200 after school programs located in schools, nonprofit organizations, community centers, housing developments, recreation centers, and churches. Now, with approximately 28,000 public school children in New Orleans there are only 42 after school sites, serving less than 25% of the targeted population. As more families return to the city and more students return to school, the need for after school programs becomes increasingly important.
The Response:
The Urban League of Greater New Orleans is working collaboratively with schools to provide quality afterschool and summer enrichment camps for all children and youth in the metro area. We currently provide a five day after school program and an exciting eight week summer enrichment camp at Dwight Eisenhower Charter School Program and are looking to expand to other locations during the Fall 2007-2008 school year. Our programs serves students in grades k-8.
Currently, the overwhelming majority of after school programs in New Orleans focus on elementary and middle school students and Only a few programs serve youth between the critical ages of 13-18 therefore we are expanding our efforts to include grades 9-12 in fall of 2008.

Program Goals and Structure:
We strive to produce students who are academically powerful, possessing a strong foundation in literacy and mathematical ideas and applications for further use in school and everyday life.
