The Urban League Women’s Business Resource Center assists business owners with formalized business planning and expanding their business through new markets. WBRC, which opened in 2001, is the one of two Women’s Centers in Louisiana and serves clients from an eight-parish region. Those parishes include Orleans, Jefferson, St. Charles, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany, St. Bernard, Plaquemine and Terrebonne.
The Women’s Business Resource Center’s mission is to assist entrepreneurs: to open a business; to hire employees; to pay applicable business taxes; to aid to the wealth and vitality of the region and most importantly to become a profitable business venture. WBRC seeks to help adults attain economic self-sufficiency through skill training, employment, entrepreneurship and wealth accumulation.
Through a competitive process, the WBRC was awarded a contract with the United States Small Business Administration to provide training, business counseling, technical assistance and mentoring opportunities to aspiring entrepreneurs. WBRC is able to provide a linkage between aspiring entrepreneurs and established entrepreneurs by empowering them to become self sufficient, self-employed and viable businesses.
WBRC focuses on several components of services/programs: (1) One-on-One free business counseling, (2) Entrepreneurial Training (Basic and/or Advanced) and (3) Provides Technical Assistance as an Intermediary for the Louisiana Department of Economic Development Small and Emerging Business Development Program.
Specifically, the aim of the WBRC is to help small and emerging businesses (SEBs) successfully meet the challenges of managing and growing their businesses by:
- Focusing on management tools and resources that will enable them to manage their business and compete more effectively;
- Providing access to conventional and unconventional capital;
- Promoting the health and financial security of SEBs;
- Identifying new markets for SEBs products and services;
- Providing training;
- Developing and facilitating business workshops and seminars.
WBRC has as its objective, to be the leading resource for small and emerging businesses (SEBs) in the Metro New Orleans area, by providing a varied array of hands-on management and technical assistance that empowers SEBs to become viable business owners in the free enterprise system.
