Urban League teams up with partners Delgado Community College, Louisiana
Technical College and Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff’s Office
to provide Educational and Employment Opportunities to At-Risk Youth
New Orleans, La. – In a continuing effort to engage the most
challenged of youth, The Urban League of Greater New Orleans is joining
with collaborative partners Delgado Community College, Louisiana Technical
College and the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff’s Office, to
implement a specialized workforce development initiative to reconnect
18 to 24 year olds who have been displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The
Urban League and its partners, along with local civic and community
leaders will gather to launch the Urban Empowerment Program Friday,
March 2, 2007, 2:00 p.m., at the Louisiana Technical College Westbank
Campus located at 475 Manhatten Boulevard in Harvey.
The program is intended to provide employment opportunities and support
services to at-risk and adjudicated youth. Participants will receive
educational and career opportunities to enhance their personal and
professional development. “Critical intervention and support
is needed for young adults whose lives have been complicated by lack
of access to quality education, social and economic opportunity,”
says Cathy Washington, Interim President & CEO of the Urban League
of Greater New Orleans. “This partnership will play a critical
role in empowering individuals with new skills that will create pathways
to self-sufficiency and ensure a brighter future for them and their
families.”
Support for the Urban Empowerment Program is made possible through
funds from the United States Department of Labor’s Youth Offender
Demonstration Project. After Hurricane Katrina, the grant was extended
to include seven additional Urban League affiliates serving Katrina
evacuees under the National Urban League’s Gulf Coast Employment
Initiative.
Youth considered eligible for the program may have limited education
and no work experience and may be adjudicated from the criminal justice
system. The Urban League and partners, Delgado Community College,
Louisiana Technical College, the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff’s
Office, Marriott Hotels and others will provide job readiness and
life skills training. Educational assistance will be provided to help
participants that did not complete high-school. Additionally, subsidized
work experience and job placement assistance will be available. The
program is intended to build upon each participant’s strengths
and minimize their deficiencies through a carefully planned set of
activities.
