STUDENT OF THE
WEEK CAMPAIGN

The Clarence Lyle Barney Student of the Week Program, co-sponsored
by The Urban League of Greater New Orleans, The University of New
Orleans and WDSU, recognizes the accomplishments of outstanding high
school seniors and advanced juniors in New Orleans schools. Students
may be nominated by submitting a nomination letter or by sending an
e-mail to sow@ulngo.org. Nominated students should show exemplary
scholastic and extracurricular work, and we are particularly interested
in students who have worked for and achieved success in difficult
conditions.
At least one Student of the Week selected during the academic year
will be eligible for a $5,000 scholarship that may be used at the
New Orleans university of their choice. A panel of university representatives
selects Students of the Week and scholarship winners. Current High
School seniors and second-term juniors are eligible to receive the
award.
A committee of faculty members from Xavier and Dillard universities
and the University of New Orleans will meet once a month to select
students. The selection panel will not give status updates on nominations.
All nominations remain eligible throughout the calendar year.
Each month, four students and their accomplishments will be featured
in The Louisiana Weekly. At the end of the calendar year, the Urban
League will host a reception for all the awardees and announce at
least one awardee as student of the year.
At this time, we are only accepting nominations from New Orleans Public
Schools system students.
Nominations should come in the form of a letter (on official business
letterhead) from a high school principal, teacher, counselor, clergyman,
employer or elected official, or a valid e-mail from those sources.
Nominations should include the name, age, school, grade, GPA and any
other indicators of academic achievement.
Nominations will be judged on how well they illustrate the following
qualifications:
- Academic Achievement (Include official transcript and any other
supporting documents)
- Community Service
- Peer Leadership
- Perseverance
- Positive Attitude
